Brazilian at the BBC

by mjohnson @ 2005-11-08 - 14:43:37

I haven't died, I broke up with my girlfriend and moved into a house with no Internet; not even a phone. Anyway I have been communicating with the BBC over a question that I am sure many people will find relevant to their everyday lives so I have decided, as the BBC have been of no help, to put my question to the web. See below for our communications so far:

Wrote the following Question

I was watching your new drama, Rome, last night with my housemate and it sparked some lively debate.

During a scene featuring full frontal nudity we noticed that the female character had a style of pubic hair colloquially known as a 'Brazilian'
i.e. the hair was neatly trimmed into a strip.

Now the question we could not answer even with some web based research was; is there any evidence that this fashion was practised in ancient Rome?

As an aside I felt there was no reason that they wouldn't as they shaved there heads and faces, Kate thought it made woman look like twelve year old girls and found it offensive; I guess you can't please all of the people all of the time.

Dear BBC

Please see previous e-mails for reference.

My previous comment wasn't a complaint, I wasn't complaining. It was a
question, A QUESTION. You know the things followed by question marks.

I clearly followed the instructions on your website on how to ask a
question about props or costumes. I feel my query fell into this category.

Let me re-iterate and hopefully simplify my QUESTION. In your recent drama program, Rome, were the featured pubic hairstyles, i.e. Brazilians, meant to be historically accurate?

Your previous reply was quite clearly useless in addressing this query.

Please try harder.

Kind regards

Update 17.11.05

I was travelling on a train with some friends telling them all about the above, eager to know their position on this subject when my question was surprisingly answered. A girl, a young scholar or perhaps a student, overhearing our conversation couldn't help but tell us about a play she knew of from ancient Rome, in the play the women deicide to deny sex to the men to make their lives more difficult they deicide to beautify themselves, part of their beautification is plucking their pubic hair.
